DEVELOPMENT REVIEW AND APPROVAL PROCESS

An Overview of the Area Planning Process

Individuals wanting to develop or change the use of land in Surrey must obtain proper approval from the City of Surrey. Land use policies and development requirements are set out in the Official Community Plan, the Zoning By-law and other public documents. Copies of these documents are available at City Hall and on this website (see Useful Links at right).

Below are some helpful guides that provide an overview of application procedures for the most common types of applications.

Board of Variance

Separate from the development application process, a person may apply to the Board of Variance for a minor variance from the Zoning By-law.  A minor variance may be permitted relating to siting, size or dimensions of buildings where it is determined compliance with the by-law would cause an undue hardship.  For more information related to the Board of Variance please contact the Legislative Services Division.
