Surrey Central Transit VIllage Transportation Showcase Project

Surrey, in partnership with the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) and the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (GVTA), was part of one of eight successful applications for funding under Transport Canada's Showcase Program.   The successful application focuses on transportation projects and programs that will reduce greenhouse gases and other emissions by encouraging the use of transit and modes of transportation other than the private automobile.  In total, $8.8 million was awarded, of which between $1 million and $2 million will be used to assist in funding two projects within the City of Surrey:

  • The TravelSmart Program is a project aimed at individualized marketing to encourage changes in household behaviour.  This project will involve five municipalities in the Lower Mainland including Surrey and is expected to commence in 2005.
  • The Transit-Oriented Development Program is focussed on the development of a Transit Village around the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station.  This project has officially commenced following approval by Council on November 29, 2004.

The Transit Village Project will reconsider the proposed land use plan for the area around the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station and develop strategies for enhancing the physical environment to increase walking, cycling and transit use.  This project could include the construction of sidewalks, traffic calming, signage, improved lighting, and traffic signal priority, improved pedestrian and cyclist crossings, bus shelters, street furniture and bicycle lockers.  In the longer term, other changes could include the planning and implementation of bicycle routes and new local transit services, the development of a revised City Centre plan and the planning and implementation of new streets and by-law changes to encourage new higher density forms of residential and mixed-use development in the area.  Implementation of these projects will continue over a three-year period.
