The British Columbia Property Tax Deferment Program is a loan program that allows you to defer the annual property taxes on your home if you meet certain criteria.

Pay Your Utility Charges

Please pay your utility (garbage and recycling) charges before applying for any Property Tax Deferment program.

The City of Surrey can only forward your deferment application to the Property Tax Deferment Office once the utility charges are paid, and the Home Owner Grant is claimed (if eligible).

 

Types of Deferment Programs

There are three different types of deferment programs: 
Regular Deferment 55 & Older, Surviving Spouse, Person with a Disability

Ongoing program

  • One of the joint registered owners must be 55 or over during the current tax year.
  • Surviving spouse: Any age, but must be a registered owner of the property and enclose a copy of the death certificate of spouse
  • Person with a disability as defined by regulation under Section 2 of the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act

Financial Hardship (FH) 

Scheduled to end December 31, 2010

  • Taxpayer needs to declare (on application) that they are facing financial hardship due to current economic conditions

Families With Children (FC)  NEW!

New for 2010 (and will be ongoing)

Qualifying homeowners who are financially supporting a dependent  child under age 18 may defer their taxes if they certify that the child

  • Lives full time with the owner on eligible property, or
  • Lives part time with owner under shared custody arrangement, or
  • Does not live with the owner, but owner pays support for the child or are responsible for fees and/or living costs if attending school

 

 

How to Apply

  1. Wait until you receive your annual Property Tax Notice.

  2. Complete the Deferment Application (Form 1) or Renewal Application
    For new applications only, all registered owners are required to complete Form 2 of the application.

  3. Submit your completed application/agreement to the City of Surrey, claim your Home Owner Grant (if eligible), and pay the utility charges (garbage & recycling) before the July 2nd due date.

Renewal Form

You must complete and submit the Renewal Application for each subsequent year that you wish to continue deferring your property taxes.
