University of Alberta Research & Teaching Joined the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, Vancouver Laboratory at UBC to head the Chemistry Section in 1966. Established a laboratory for molecular structure determination, principally employing magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Pursued research in natural products chemistry including the so called red tide or paralytic shellfish toxins. Published in both Canadian and International Journals. Collaborated on a number of graduate research programs and served as an external graduate committee member on most. Developed and taught a graduate level course at UBC entitled The Molecular Basis of Chemoreception. Left the Fisheries Research Board in 1979 and continued research at the UBC. Joined Syndel Laboratories, a small privately owned pharmaceutical manufacturer and distributor in Vancouver, B.C. in 1986, as senior scientist. Public Participation Held a variety of executive and committee appointments in the Scouting movement for a period of 9 years. Became an active member of a local ratepayers association principally concerned with environmental and land use issues. Participated in, and co-authored the environment and land use report of one of the several committees established as part of the public process that lead to the adoption of the Greater Vancouver Regional District's "Liveable Region Plan" in 1975. Became an executive member and served as treasurer of the B.C. Environmental Council, a coalition of naturalists, fisheries and environmental interests, mainly active in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Public Office Elected Alderman, Surrey 1978 and re-elected 1980, 1982 and 1984. Elected Mayor 1987 and re-elected Mayor (now 3 year terms) 1990 and 1993. Member of the Board, Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) 1988 through 1996 inclusive. Served on numerous committees of the Board both as Alderman and as Mayor. However, the main focus was in the areas of land use planning and transportation, having chaired the GVRD Transit Committee during the period 1980 through 1982 and on various land use and transportation committees continuously through to December of 1996 - Former member of the Board, B.C. Transit.
- Former member of the Vancouver Regional Transit Commission.
- Chaired the Strategic Planning Committee of the GVRD through 4 of the 5 years leading to the Region's Strategic Plan embracing both land use and transportation plans, adopted in late 1995. In recognition of that contribution, named honorary life member of the Planning Institute of B.C. in May 1996.
- Served as an active member of the Caucus of Mayors of Canada's large cities 1988 through 1996 and served on both the Urban Safety and International Programs Committees of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities during the same period.
- During the past several years, served as an active member of the Cascadia Transportation and Trade Task Force, a loose coalition of political and business interests linking the major metropolitan regions from Portland to Greater Vancouver. Have co-chaired the Task Force and continue to work on issues of mutual interest such as high speed rail and border crossing concerns.
- Developed a strong interest in the emerging role cities play in the economy and the environment and have a deep interest in the governance of cities and regions both domestically and internationally.
- Participated in the steering committee which laid the foundation for the establishment of the International Center for Sustainable Cities (ICSC) in Vancouver as part of Canada's commitment coming out of the UNCED conference in Rio in 1992. Attended both preconferences in Toronto and Curitiba Brazil giving rise to the Curitiba Declaration and the subsequent conference in Rio where the final declaration was drafted for presentation to the Earth Summit on behalf of International Cities Organizations.
- Currently a Director of ICSC.
- Established two sister city agreements between Surrey and Koto Ku, one of the wards of Metropolitan Tokyo, and the special economic zone, the City of Zuhai, bordering Macao, Guangdong, Province, PRC. Developed informal exchange of citizens and public officials between Surrey and Kakogawa in the Hyogo Prefecture Japan.
