Councillor Tom Gill

Councillor Tom Gill represents a new generation of leadership for Surrey City Council.  Councillor Gill believes that Council should support all citizens and reflect the diversity of our multicultural City, be fiscally responsible and serve the needs of families and children.  "Surrey is a great City and I want to participate in making it better.  I want to see an end to violence, opportunities for youth at risk, a stronger community and continued strong fiscal leadership."

Councillor Gill was born, raised and completed high school in Kamloops, British Columbia and moved to Surrey in 1986.  Councillor Gill and his wife Pav have been married for 12 years and have been residents of the Fraser Heights community since 1996.  Councillor Gill and Pav are raising their three children, ages 3 to 9, and understand the challenges faced by young families in today's society.

In 1988, Councillor Gill graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with a Financial Management Diploma, and by 1996 became a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).  He is the Controller of Coast Foundation Society, the largest non-profit mental health agency in B.C.  In June 2007, Councillor Gill was appointed as a Director of the Healthcare Benefit Trust (HBT) which is a not-for-profit health and welfare trust that administers employee benefits on behalf of participating employers, provides group health and welfare benefits to eligible healthcare employees and is funded with contributions paid by participating member employers.

Councillor Gill was re-elected to office in the November 2008 Civic election.  He has been appointed to the following Committees:

  • Finance Committee (Chair)
  • Audit Committee (Chair)
  • Parks & Community Services Committee
  • Parcel Tax Roll Review Panel (Chair)
  • Public Safety Committee

Recently re-appointed as Chair of the Finance Committee, Councillor Gill will use his professional accounting background to further facilitate financial policies and strategies which ensure public funds are utilized in the most beneficial and responsible manner.

Councillor Gill is Vice Chair of the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society and sits on their Investment Strategy Committee.  He has also served as Treasurer for the BC Non Profit Housing Association, and participated in many fundraising activities in co-operation with a prominent local South Asian Radio Station.  These fund-raising activities have benefited Surrey Memorial Hospital, the Canadian Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund, the Nargis Dutt Cancer Foundation, Children's Hospital and Canadian Blood Services.

"My wife and I love Surrey because it is an excellent community in which to raise our children.  I will endeavour to deliver strong leadership for all Surrey's citizens.  I know that Surrey will become respected and admired as the best, safest and most prosperous City in Canada to live and play in and I expect the residents of Surrey will be the envy of all the world.  To that end, I will continue to work towards responsible growth and development that creates prosperity, jobs and a strong flourishing community."
