NEW! Smoke-Free Signage

The City has partnered with the BC Lung Association to have students deliver the Smoke-free metres signage to Surrey businesses throughout the summer.  Below are the final signs that have been approved by By-laws and now available for businesses in Surrey.

Bylaw Information

The City of Surrey, Smoking Regulation By-law, No. 16694 regulates where smoking is permitted in public places within the City limits.

Where Smoking is Prohibited

Smoking is prohibited in any common public area; in a taxi cab or limousine; on a school bus, public bus or any form of public transportation; in an enclosed or partially enclosed shelter where people wait to board a vehicle for hire or public transit; in a building (except as otherwise permitted by the By-law); in a vehicle if any occupant of the vehicle is under 19 years of age; or within seven and one-half metres (7.5 m) of any opening into a building including any door or window that opens or any air intake.

Where Smoking is Permitted

Smoking is permitted in a private club or in enclosed premises that are not open to the public.

Penalties

Any person who owns, controls, manages, supervises or operates a business or other use which occupies all or substantially all of a building; a business or other use which occupies premises; common areas, or a customer service area is responsible for ensuring that smoking does not occur. It should be noted that the City of Surrey is able to charge both the smoker and the responsible person with violations of this by-law. The maximum fine allowed is up to $2,000.00 on conviction.
