The By-law Enforcement Section is responsible for the enforcement of many of the city's by-laws. A by-law is a piece of legislation that a city or municipality enacts through its Council. By-laws are put into place for various reasons, some of which are:
- public safety
- enhancement of the community
- to regulate property use (zoning)
- animal control
- pollution
