The Sustainability Charter's goal for Economic Sustainability is to create a local economy that builds on Surrey’s natural advantages, and to use the land base and human resources efficiently to create a broad range of well located, transit accessible and environmentally friendly businesses that provide attractive local employment opportunities and a sustainable revenue base for the City.
Economic sustainability is essential for providing the resources required to enjoy a high quality of life now and in the future. Through the Sustainability Charter, Surrey aims to be a “green” business leader, a a place for others to come for green ideas and green business partners. The City will have a balance of high quality local jobs available for its employed residents, resulting in a minimal commuting distances and a strong tax base.
The City will also be a leader in protection of its Agriculture Land Reserve (ALR) and will enhance the productivity of its land base and promote both sustainable and urban agriculture. Making fresh local produce available saves on rising transportation costs as fuel costs rise, and also provides food that will be more affordable to people of all income levels.
