The Sustainability Charter's goal for Socio-Cultural Sustainability is to promote a safe, caring, engaged, and liveable community, with a sense of place, that is inclusive of all aspects of diversity and provides a range of educational, recreational, cultural and employment opportunities, affordable and appropriate housing, transportation options and personal, health and social services that are accessible to all.
For a community to be sustainable, the basic needs of its residents must be met. Surrey will be home to advanced education institutions producing cutting edge sustainability research and graduates who are experts in sustainable development. A full range of community-based health and social services will be available throughout the city including health education, and prevention and wellness promotion activities. Surrey will be home to the region’s fullest service hospital, offering state of the art health care and supporting an innovative biotechnology industry and health sciences school.
Making progress on Socio-Cultural Sustainability will require critical linkages with the Plan for the Well-Being of Surrey Residents, and the City's Crime Reduction Strategy; you will find more information on these important initiatives under the Social Planning and Crime Reduction pages (provided here as well as under "Links and Resources"). As we move forward with implementing the Sustainability Charter, we will share regular updates on the City's initiatives and activities.
