City of Surrey - Emergency & Protective Services - Fire

The HomeSafe Program is the creation of the Surrey Fire Service, developed by Fire Service members who provided suggestions and recommendations to cut down on the number of private dwelling fires in the City of Surrey. Through a special partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley, new evidence-based strategies have been developed for the HomeSafe Program.

“In light of the fact that 75% of all fires over the past twenty years have occurred in private dwellings, it was absolutely necessary that a program of this nature be developed,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “Bringing this all together into a comprehensive program like this will undoubtedly create greater fire-awareness and modify current behaviours to encourage personal safety for young and old.”

Four specific initiatives are contained in the HomeSafe Program:

Free Home Safety Inspections
- Residents of Surrey will now be able to request a free home safety inspection at any time during the year to identify and address safety concerns
Fire-Setter Intervention Program
- Developed in collaboration with Fraser health, Surrey RCMP, School District 36 and Surrey Fire Services, the program will provide specialized resources to families of juveniles who have been involved in fire play or fire setting.
Child/Seniors Welfare and Human Trafficking Training
- Surrey Fire Service personnel have received instruction from Fraser Health Child Protection representatives to assist in recognizing indicators of abuse or neglect. They have also received R.C.M.P. training on recognizing indicators for human trafficking.
Fire Prevention Week / Public Displays
- The second week of October has been designated as Fire Prevention Week and the Surrey Fire Service will canvas local neighbourhoods to increase public awareness about fire safety, prevention and escape information.
