Fire Prevention and Public Education

Fire Prevention and Public Education is one of five Divisions within the the Surrey Fire Service family dedicated to improving the overall safety of each and every citizen of Surrey as well as those who visit our fine city.  Our efforts are focused on three primary areas:

1. Inspections   2. Education   3. Investigations

INSPECTION - regular scheduled inspections by Fire Prevention staff and Fire Suppression members ensure that commercial and industrial buildings, assemblies, and residential occupancies are code compliant as required by the B.C Fire Code. During these inspections, buildings are checked for the condition of the fire safety equipment (fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, extinguishers, etc.) as well as fire hazards, life safety issues, and access for firefighting. Inspection Guidelines   A new program introduced March 2009 will afford private home owners and renters the opportunity to request a home inspection by on duty Surrey Fire Service members.  Check out our HomeSafe program.

EDUCATION - The Fire Prevention Division is a proactive resource centre for all members of our community and through various programs we attempt to inform the public on how to maintain a safe and fire free environment. Fire Prevention Week, Hall tours, and group presentations are a few of the many ways we attempt to keep our citizens informed on the best practices of fire safety.
Please contact us at 604-543-6709 or 604-543-6713 for further information.

INVESTIGATIONS - our highly specialized and highly respected investigation team follows up on all fire incidents in the city to determine cause and origin.  This information is forwarded to the Fire Commissioner's Office for data input thereby contributing to the accumulation of information used to track patterns and common problems found throughout the Province.  The dissemination of this information has led to the compilation  “Residential Fires in Surrey B.C” (1988 – 2007), by Amanda V. McCormick.    Full Report
