Earthquake Preparedness

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS:

Ensure that you have a battery-powered radio in working order, with spare batteries, to listen to instructions from your local station.

Prepare an emergency survival kit that includes food, water and medical supplies in an easy-to-carry container. In addition to the battery-powered radio and spare batteries, it should contain the following items:  Disaster Homepack

Here are some things you can do that will help you prepare for an earthquake:

  • Have a family emergency plan in place and practice it.
  • Have an out-of-province telephone contact where your family can call and check in if you get separated.
  • Check your home for hazards; secure water tanks and top heavy furniture, appliances, etc. against movement.

Actions to take during an Earthquake:

If you are in a building

  • Remain calm
  • Stay inside, stay away from windows
  • Get under a heavy desk or table and hang on, or sit in a doorway or corner
  • If you can't get under something strong then flatten yourself against an interior wall,
    protect your head and neck
  • Do not attempt to leave the building unless you feel that the building is unsafe.
  • Wait for the shaking to stop, be aware that there will be aftershocks

If you are outdoors

  • Get into an open area away from power lines, structures and trees.
  • Wait for the shaking to stop, be aware that there will be aftershocks.

If you are driving your car

  • Stop in a clear area
  • Stay in your car until the shaking stops
  • Wait for the shaking to stop, be aware that there will be aftershocks.

 After the shaking has stopped

  • Check yourself and those around you for injuries, apply first aid if needed.
Do not attempt to move seriously injured people.
  • Evacuate the building
  • Use the stairs, do not attempt to use the elevators
  • Check for gas or water leaks. Turn off at the source if leaks are found
  • Check for building damage, e.g. roof, cracks.
  • Turn on battery powered radio, listen and follow the instructions from
    the emergency personnel.
  • Assist others if you are able
  • Use the phone only if it is absolutely necessary. Emergency crews will
    need all available lines
