Surrey - A Green Streets Canada City!

Surrey Awarded Grant to Restore Historic Arboretum!

The City of Surrey has been awarded a $33,000 Green Streets Canada grant to begin the restoration of the historic arboretum located at Green Timbers.

The Tree Canada Foundation and Natural Resources Canada annually award funding through the Green Streets Canada program, the flagship program of the Tree Canada Foundation, which is a national organization dedicated to raising awareness among Canadians of the importance of Canada’s urban forests.   Green Streets is the country’s only national urban-forest innovation program.

“The award of the Green Streets Canada grant to the City for the restoration of the Green Timbers arboretum is a very important project for the City of Surrey, furthering our ongoing commitment to the preservation of trees in the City” said Mayor Dianne Watts on behalf of Council.

Of the twenty-four grants awarded across Canada in 2006, the City of Surrey received the largest award.   The funding will be used to restore many of the trees in the historic arboretum, remove alien invasive plants such as English ivy, and install trails for the public to use to enjoy the splendid trees of the arboretum.  The City is will be working very closely with the Green Timbers Heritage Society on the project.

The arboretum is not yet open to the public; however, on Saturday, May 5 2007, during Green Timbers Heritage Society Arbor Day Celebrations, the public was able to view the arboretum and all the improvements.  Visit www.greentimbers.ca for more information on the 2007 celebrations.
