Heritage Policies in the Official Community Plan
Since 1986, Surrey's Official Community Plan, Local Area Plans and Neighbourhood Concept Plans have contained policies and strategies for heritage conservation. The current Official Community Plan seeks to preserve Surrey's heritage by identifying and protecting heritage resources that have a distinct identity, reflect a unique heritage character and are recognized for their heritage value as follows:

Key direction
Heritage resources provide a link to the past and cultural enrichment for existing and future residents. Surrey will identify, retain, re-use and manage its natural, cultural and built heritage in a co-operative manner with those affected by heritage initiatives.
Moving in this key direction means addressing heritage issues through the following policies:
Policies
I-2.1 Enhance Heritage Preservation and Revitalization
Preserve, protect, integrate, maintain and revitalize buildings, structures, sites and landscape or natural and cultural features that are as having historical, architectural or cultural significance, individual sites or as a collective Heritage Conservation Area. Areas of significance may also include archaeological sites and artifacts and other cultural remains.

Surrey Heritage Management Plan
In January 2003, Surrey City Council approved the Surrey Heritage Management Plan as the guiding strategy to implement the policy and objectives for heritage conservation in Surrey. It is being put into effect though the Heritage Management Plan Implementation Strategy, which is a framework coordinating actions to be completed.
