Come in and browse our reference library, look at historic photographs and maps, read old newspapers on microfilm, listen to oral history tapes, or research your own specific Surrey-related query.
|
The Surrey Archives preserves the documentary history of the City of Surrey. Many different people, such as family historians, students, lawyers, real estate agents, university researchers, curiosity seekers, City staff, and heritage consultants, access the Archives’ collection.
So anybody can use the Archives?
Absolutely. Every researcher, whether it be someone curious about the name of a former street or someone researching the development of Whalley Town Centre, must register for a FREE Archives user pass. Photo identification is required.
Why do I need a pass to use the Archives?
The Archives’ collection consists of original material that is not available elsewhere. Due to this fact, Reference Staff must keep track of those who access the collection. Just as you need a pass to sign books out of a library, you need a pass to access the collection of the Surrey Archives.
Upon receiving your Archives pass, Reference Staff will assist you with your research query. Don’t be afraid if your question is broad or unclear. Staff will help you narrow your question to a more manageable research topic. Think of the staff as your guides. They facilitate the research process by providing archival material relevant to your query.
Can I enquire remotely?
Yes. Enquiries can be made in-person, by phone, fax, and by mail and email. Reference Staff will inform you of the resources available for research relevant to your query. Staff will also provide you with an answer to your query should it be one requiring only quick consultation of the Reference Files. Under special circumstances, Reference Staff will research a topic. A fee is required for this service.
