City of Surrey Wins 2010 GamesTown Early Bird Title

Stephanie Cadieux, MLA for Surrey-Panorama was on hand to present the City of Surrey with, a prize package awarded through the Province’s GamesTown 2010 competition.

"Surrey citizens are already getting into the 2010 spirit and we are happy to be one of the communities recognized as an early bird GamesTown winner," said Mayor Dianne Watts.

The on-line contest is designed to encourage individuals and businesses to tell the world how they are making a difference in supporting sport, healthy living, sustainable development and the Olympic Games spirit by submitting stories to the website or making a healthy living pledge. 

Three B.C. communities will be picked as the gold, silver and bronze GamesTowns and will receive up to $100,000 to put towards sports or healthy living facility improvements of their choosing. Along the way, prizes such as tickets to the Winter Games will be awarded to participants.The number of community members having made a healthy living pledge will be considered when awarding the GamesTown2010 grand prizes.  

 “We hope everyone will enter this contest and show that the City of Surrey has embraced the 20% more active by 2010 challenge and the spirit of healthy living that the 2010 Winter Games represent,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Mayor’s 2010 / Spirit of BC Committee.
