Surrey's Citizen of the Year is Marie Cooper: A Dedicated Community Member Receives Major Award

May 19, 2009

Surrey, BC – Marie Cooper is this year’s recipient of the Good Citizen Award, an honour presented by Mayor Dianne Watts on behalf of Surrey City Council at the City of Surrey’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet on Monday, May 19th 2009.

Ms. Cooper is a long time citizen of the City of Surrey and is recognized for her involvement and commitment to her community.  Ms. Cooper is best known for her dedicated service on the City’s Board of Variance, where she has served as chair since 1989 and as a member since 1983.  She has also served as President of the Newton Ratepayers Association, ran for Alderman in the mid 1970’s, and has contributed to many community causes with her time and energy.

“Marie embodies the values we recognize in the Good Citizen Award,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “Her passion for her community, her commitment to serving the city’s residents in a fair and respectful way, and her ability to find a common ground are just a few of the things that make her such an important pillar in our community.”

Among her many notable contributions in Surrey, Ms. Cooper has served as the general contractor of their family-owned construction company, run her own Real Estate firm in the Surrey area, been involved in Panorama Ridge with the horse stables and riding rink in Joe Brown Park, and sat on several Planning committees for the City of Surrey.  She was selected to be a member of the Canadian Planning Institute in the 1970’s and was an employee of the BC Assessment Authority.
