In honour of the City of Surrey Fire Fighter’s Association’s 50th anniversary, the City of Surrey unveiled the Surrey Fire Fighter’s Service Statue today at Holland Park.
The artwork, entitled “Protecting the Future – Serving the Present” by a Vancouver Island team of artists ArtForm Sculpture Studio Inc., includes sculptures depicting a fire fighter and children. The image was based on a local Surrey fire fighter.
“This artwork is particularly poignant,” said Mayor Dianne Watts at the ceremony “our fire fighters are true heroes in our community as they not only save lives every day but they raise money and help charitable causes; this statue is a beautiful way to commemorate their 50 years of service.”
The City of Surrey’s public art program has installed over 40 artworks in public places, from recreation centres to parks to arts facilities, since it began over 10 years ago. This sculpture, “Protecting the Future – Serving the Present”, was generously donated by the Fire Fighters.
“The Public Art program has received a number of gifts and donations of artwork over the years which has led to the City enjoying one of the best and diverse civic arts collections in British Columbia,” said Councillor Villeneuve, Council Liaison for the Public Art Advisory Committee.
