Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey marked an important milestone on Tuesday, December 13 with a community celebration at Guildford Recreation Centre to commemorate the opening of Surrey’s tenth MYzone site.  Launched in 2012, MYzone is a drop-in recreation program designed to provide children ages eight to 12 with access to high quality, safe and nurturing afterschool activities that support healthy social-emotional development, leadership skill building, self-confidence and physical activity.

“We know positive influence during the Middle Years of children has the potential to make a critical and long-term difference in their lives, their families and our community,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “MYzone’s holistic approach provides a key service that not only helps children build the skills needed to become physically and emotionally healthy adults, but also strengthens the family by creating a sense of belonging and opportunities for community engagement.”

In addition to inclusive recreation opportunities and basic homework support, the program—which costs just $40 per school year—is part of the City’s broader focus to provide meaningful engagement during the critical after-school hours. According to research, afterschool is an important time to engage children in active play and community based recreation services.  If left unsupervised, children can be at risk to engage in negative activities.

“We are pleased to celebrate the expansion of MYzone and acknowledge all of our partners who have helped shape the landscape of this wonderful program,” said Councillor Dave Woods. “We also extend our gratitude to include the volunteers, families and children that have taken this program and made it their own. MYzone has become a unique environment of learning that captures children’s interests and allows them to grow to be happy and healthy by providing a space to be active and positively engaged.”

MYzone locations are open weekdays between 3pm and 6pm from October–June. Membership is free to for those who hold a valid Leisure Access Program pass, a family full-facility recreation pass or children and youth full facility pass.  For more information including locations, can be found here.
