Surrey’s Waste Collection Goes Green

December 14, 2011 - The City of Surrey is transforming its waste collection process to reduce emissions and divert waste from the landfill. The City approved a new residential waste collection contract with BFI Canada this week.

Surrey Wants Emergency Shelter Beds to Open Sooner

November 29, 2011 - City Council wants the criteria changed for declaring an ‘Extreme Weather Alert’ in the city, which allows for the opening of emergency shelter beds. Council is recommending the Surrey/White Rock Extreme Weather Response (EWR) Plan be changed from the current minus two degrees Celsius, to zero degrees Celsius.

Surrey Helps Stop Cycle of Crime Through Restorative Justice

November 24, 2011 - The City of Surrey is helping to stop the cycle of crime through its restorative justice program. The City, RCMP and the community celebrated the success of the program at an event at City Hall today, in support of National Restorative Justice Week.

City Donates Record Amount of Money to United Way

November 22, 2011 - City of Surrey employees raised a record $233, 674.87 for children and seniors in need through the 2011 United Way Campaign. Councillor Marvin Hunt and the City’s United Way committee handed over the cheque today during a presentation at City Hall.

October 26, 2011 - The City of Surrey is first major city in Canada to host a publically accessible and free-to-use electric vehicle charging station at City Hall. Mayor Dianne Watts and City Council joined with community partners, including BC Hydro and Powertech to open the facility and introduce the City’s first electric vehicle into its fleet.

October 24, 2011 - Mayor Dianne Watts is renewing calls for the provincial government to establish a community court in Surrey in order to facilitate a problem-solving approach to crime, and create a more effective and efficient court system in the city. She put forward a motion to the City’s public safety committee meeting today, which was unanimously supported by members.

October 24, 2011 - The City of Surrey received a service delivery award last week at the Government Technology Exhibition and Conference (GTEC) for its website redesign and implementation project. The award of distinction honours the project team for its exceptional leadership and innovation in the delivery of services to Canadians. In September, the project received a best practice award from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities.

October 13, 2011 - The Surrey Homelessness & Housing Society announced the recipients of its 2011 annual grants today. The Society is providing close to $200,000 to nine Surrey-based agencies to support projects that will provide solutions to homelessness in Surrey.

New Red Light Cameras Go Live in Surrey

September 14, 2011 - Six new intersection safety cameras (ISC) have gone live in Surrey, bringing the total number of cameras to 27. The cameras detect and photograph vehicles running a red light and are expected to reduce casualty crashes at the sites by about six per cent a year.

September 12, 2011 - Surrey City Council has officially given its support in principle to the provincial government’s proposal of establishing a Municipal Auditor General (MAG) Office. Council approved a report and resolution at tonight’s meeting that will be forwarded to the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

Construction Underway on Multi-Service Centre for Homeless

June 28, 2011 - Construction of the Quibble Creek Health and Phoenix Transition Housing Centre at 13670 94A Avenue has begun. The City of Surrey and the Provincial Government are working in partnership to create the centre to provide support services and transitional housing for those with mental health and addictions issues at risk of homelessness in Surrey.

RCMP Officers Charged in Connection with Surrey Six Homicide Case

June 24, 2011 - Mayor Dianne Watts issued the following statement: "The charges issued today by the RCMP against four of its members in connection with breach of trust, obstruction of justice, and fraud send a clear and serious message that police officers may not abuse the power of their office and disregard the laws, rules and regulations which govern the department's operations."

City Enacts Outdoor Burning Ban

June 23, 2011 - The Wildfire Management Branch has banned open burning in the Coastal Fire Region due to drying weather conditions. The beginning of the summer season and warmer temperatures has resulted in dry conditions throughout the Coastal Fire District including the City of Surrey, making outdoor fires a hazard.

New Gas Stations Must Provide Alternative Fuel Source

May 30, 2011 - Surrey City Council passed an innovative new fuel initiative at tonight’s Council meeting. All new service stations in Surrey will be required to provide at least one alternative fuel source, such as hydrogen, compressed natural gas, or electric vehicle recharging, in addition to conventional gasoline, diesel and propane energy.
