PARKit

Surrey's pop-up park program

Through PARKit, we're transforming parts of parking lots and hard-surfaced areas into temporary micro-parks with vibrant urban green spaces. When PARKit activations pop up, they animate boring grey spaces into exciting people places.

PARKit provides the opportunity to grab a bite from a mobile food truck, be entertained by a variety of buskers, or to just relax and watch the world go by.

PARKit Design Challenge

Enter the PARKit Design Challenge by May 17, 2013, to win $12,000 to fabricate and install your design for a summertime pop-up park.

Upcoming PARKits

PARKit is returning during the Party for the Planet!  The site, located adjacent to Surrey Central SkyTrain station, will be activated from April 27 to May 4, 2013. The food trucks that'll be on site are:

  • It's All About Grilling (April 27)
  • Old Country Periogy (April 29 to May 1)
  • Reel Mac & Cheese (May 2 and 3)
  • JJ's Trucketeria (May 4)

For more information, keep an eye on the City of Surrey's Twitter and Facebook page (Websites. New windows.).

The history of PARKit

The first PARKit was activated in mid April, 2012, in the North Surrey Recreation Centre parking lot.  It was developed as a pilot project in coordination with Party for the Planet. Our first activation was such a great success that a second stand-alone installation was activated later that summer.

Each PARKit activation has included a number of food trucks and carts.  The idea was that we would test out the feasibility of a permanent food truck program in the City, which we are working on!  Some of the food carts that have attended PARKit included Dougie Dog, It's All About Grill, Bubble GalloNum Num Food Cart, Guanaco Truck. We believe that the more variety and diversity the better.

PARKit is a partnership between Surrey's Parks Planning & Design and Community Planning sections.
