Environmental Education in the Classroom

EnvironmentalEducation

The City of Surrey, in partnership with Skye Consulting, offers a new suite of workshops on the topics of waste, energy and water conservation that affect our community. These programs are FREE, highly interactive and curriculum-connected.

No Litter Zone - Grade 2

75 minutes
This workshop explores the environmental and social issues with litter and enlists students as ambassadors of our community. This program consists of an interactive in-class workshop, a hands-on litter investigation, and an outside cleanup.

Energy Shift - Grade 4

This workshop explores energy conservation in terms of what we can do and the choices we have. We explore renewable and non-renewable energy in engaging and hands-on ways to investigate that energy comes in a variety of forms. Students learn the links between energy, greenhouse gases, and climate change. We also have fun building mini solar scooters that move with the power of the sun!

Water Wise - Grade 4

60 minutes
This workshop explores our local water sources, water conservation and the importance of water in our lives (very timely after the dry summer of 2015), global access to water, and how lucky we are to have the water coming out of our taps! During this workshop, students discover that all living things and their environment are interdependent. Students get to taste, test and learn about BC’s amazing tap water.

Rethink Waste 5 - Grade 5

60 minutes
This workshop examines our “stuff” and how we use earth materials as natural resources. Students learn how we can practice AVOID before we practice the 3Rs. This highly interactive workshop educates Surrey's young residents on the life cycle of our natural resources once we make products from them, waste recycling and organic waste diversion basics, and what is "away" when we throw our garbage away. Also, students learn about the exciting future of organics in our community!

Rethink Waste 9 - Grade 9 Science

This hands-on workshop explores the sustainability of systems in terms of what we buy and what we throw away. This workshop allows students to discover the circular economy and how we are all interconnected. We discuss the life cycle of our natural resources once we make products from them, waste recycling and organic waste diversion basics, and what is "away" when we throw our garbage away. Also, students learn about the exciting future of organics in our community!

Wise Shift: Energy and Water Conservation - Grade 10 Science or Planning
