City of Surrey Arts & Heritage

Your favourite weekend of culture returns across Canada! Culture Days is a Canada-wide volunteer movement to raise awareness, accessibility, participation, and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

The City of Surrey’s Arts & Heritage Services are heading to Central City Shopping Centre and invite you to participate in and enjoy free activities and performances—all at the south court near Winners and Best Buy. These arts and heritage experiences are offered by Community Art Program, Historic Stewart Farm, Surrey Archives, Surrey Art Gallery, Surrey Civic Theatres, and Surrey Museum. Bring your family and stay for some or stay for them all!

Participate in Activities

These activities take place continuously from 1pm to 5pm.

  • Visual artists and art educators will be on hand to help you make fun art monsters with recycled materials to take home with you. Don’t forget to pick up a Gallery button, too!
  • You can add your brush mark to a large shared drawing at the Sumi Ink Club booth.
  • Surrey Museum is bringing an interactive Children’s Explore Zone, as well as spinning wheels and looms for people to try. Pick up a free promotional item for the upcoming Museum of Surrey!
  • The ever popular Surrey Archives will have then-and-now matching games, screens depicting archival photos of the City, and more.
  • Artifacts depicting the Historic Stewart Farm will be showcased so visitors can learn about pioneer life in early 1900s Surrey.
  • Surrey’s Culture Days ambassador Lyn Verra-Lay will lead a visual and literary activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Surrey Arts Centre. Collaborate on a mixed-media project using archival images of the building and share your memories of attending art classes, theatre shows, Gallery exhibits, and more in a journal that will be displayed at Surrey Art Centre’s semi-centennial celebrations in 2017/18.

Enjoy Performances

These performances happen at different times between 1pm and 5pm.

  • The Wild Moccasins Dancers—from different First Nations living in the Lower Mainland—will showcase some of the powwow styles like Women's Traditional, Jingle Dress, Fancy Shawl, and the Hoop Dance. They’ll share a bit of the history of the dances, and invite you to try some steps.
  • African Stages will delight you with some drumming, dancing, and storytelling.
  • Immigrant Lessons will showcase an excerpt from the full length stage production "Immigrant Lessons 101," which looks at the obstacles and triumphs of first and second generation immigrants in Canada. Elements of Pantsula, Afro, House, Hip Hop, and Dancehall highlight their mission statement of cultural pluralism.
  • There will be some surprises when the dance groups join together for improvised movement performances!
  • The Re-Enactors performance troupe—based on real settlers from Surrey's past—will entertain and delight as they share some of Surrey’s true stories. Catch Zennosuke Inouye, TJ Sullivan, and Eric Anderson in character and ready to chat about their lives.
