Volunteer opportunities with the Surrey Art Gallery
Volunteer Docents (Tour Guide)
Give tours of the Gallery's exhibitions to school children and community groups as a Volunteer Docent (Website. New window). You'll use hands-on activities and questioning techniques in tours, helping students enhance their visual literacy and critical thinking skills as they respond to the artworks.
Our docents have even been featured in the Surrey Leader- read the complete the "Decent Docents" news article (PDF. New window.).
We train our volunteer Docents throughout the school year. In docent training, you'll attend tours and talks by curators, exhibiting artists, education staff and guest speakers.
Special Event Assistant
Work with the public and assist at events like exhibition openings and artists' talks as a Special Event Volunteer (Website. New window). You'll help the public interact with artists and engage with contemporary art and ideas. You'll also assist activities at Family Days, helping families can share new art experiences and knowledge.
Children's Art Programs Assistant
Help out with children's art classes and week-long art camps as a Children's Art Programs Assistant (Website. New window) or Art Camp Youth Volunteer.
- Learn about teaching and children.
- Work with children on-one-one.
- Help the instructor organize art materials.
Our youth volunteers also join us as Special Event Volunteers in the annual Student Docent program with the exhibition of Art by Surrey School Students.
Become a Student Docent (Website. New window) - come in for a day and get trained to give tours at the opening reception for the annual exhibition of Art by Surrey School Students. This one-day program gives you a unique experience in art interpretation and public speaking.
Volunteering behind the scenes
Work behind the scenes! As a Library Assistant (Website. New window), you'll organize materials for research in the Gallery's reference library. We also call on Artist Installation Assistants to help exhibiting artists install their artworks.
SAGA Gift Shop Volunteer
Spend time surrounded by finely crafted artwork. The Surrey Art Gallery Association assists local artists by displaying and selling their work. Join us as a Gift Shop volunteer to learn about the artists and artworks, and meet the public in a relaxed atmosphere.
