Arts Volunteering

Sculptural art captivates students on a school tour with a docent

As a volunteer with the Surrey Art Gallery, you'll help the public engage with art and ideas in active and meaningful ways, and enrich your own understanding as well.

Here are all the programs you can participate in:

Docents (Tour Guides)

Give tours of the Gallery's exhibitions to school children and community groups as a Docent. You'll use hands-on activities and questioning techniques in tours, helping students enhance their visual literacy and critical thinking skills as they respond to the artworks. We train our volunteer docents throughout the school year. In docent training, you'll attend tours and talks by curators, exhibiting artists, education staff, and guest speakers.

Gallery Event Volunteers

Work with the public and assist at events like exhibition openings and artist talks as a Gallery Event Volunteer. You'll help the public interact with artists and engage with contemporary art and ideas. You'll also assist activities at Family Sundays where you'll help families explore, enjoy, and create art together.

Children's Art Programs Assistants

Share your passion for art with eager young minds! Help out with children's art classes and week-long art day camps as a Children's Art Programs Assistant where you'll get to lead games, organize studios, work with children one-on-one, and assist the instructor.

Youth Docents (Gallery Educators)

Discover contemporary art and ideas, develop public speaking skills, and gain leadership experience. Become a Youth Docent and enhance exhibitions through activities that are equal parts fun and educational.

To see all our opportunities for youth, visit our Young People at the Gallery page.

Library Volunteers

Work behind the scenes! As a Library Assistant, you'll organize materials for research in the Gallery's reference library.

SAGA Gift Shop Volunteers

Spend time surrounded by finely crafted artwork. The Surrey Art Gallery Association assists local artists by displaying and selling their work. Join them as a Gift Shop volunteer to learn about the artists and artworks, and meet the public in a relaxed atmosphere. To volunteer for this position, contact the Gift Shop directly at 604-501-5187.
