Canada, eh! Fraser Valley Quilters' Guild

Feast your eyes on traditional and contemporary quilts with Canadian themes.

Nothing warms up a space like colourful quilts hanging from walls—make that colourful Canadiana quilts. Always popular with visitors, Fraser Valley Quilters’ Guild returns to Surrey Art Gallery with a new exhibition of traditional and contemporary quilts titled Canada, eh!

In response to the 150th anniversary of Canadian Federation, Guild members were issued a special challenge: to produce a 24 by 24 inch-sized quilt featuring red and white and an additional colour of their selection, based around a Canadian theme. Canada, eh! brings together the results of this challenge, while also displaying several larger quilts based on Canadian culture. You’ll see the maple leaf and Mountie, as well as abstract patterns, animals and plants, pop-cultural references, and even personal stories of family immigrant history. Collectively, these works embody humour, the texture of ordinary life, and a keen observation of the designs in the world around us.

About Fraser Valley Quilters' Guild

The Fraser Valley Quilters’ Guild’s aim is to share the joy of quilting with the public by way of shows, displays, and demonstrations. It is also active as a charitable organization, making quilts for donation to BC Women’s Hospital and the SOMOS eco-sustainability project in Guatemala, among other causes. Members of the Guild are encouraged to develop their skills through learning experiences such as workshops and talks by guest speakers. Members are adept in a variety of quilting techniques, both traditional and contemporary, such as embroidery, appliqué, thread painting, needle punch, beading, use of overlay fabrics, hand-painted elements, and hand-dyed fabric.
