Volunteering Brings Joy to Bridgeview Senior

Volunteers, Surrey Seniors, Senior Volunteers

Lefty, age 79, drops by the Bridgeview Community Centre each day to chat with staff about everything under the sun.

Over the years, staff got to know the friendly senior quite well and suggested he might enjoy volunteering for the City of Surrey.

While he didn’t initially think it was for him, to the delight of staff, Lefty agreed to become an official volunteer for the annual Breakfast with Santa event. He served hot chocolate, tea and coffee while greeting and striking up conversations with patrons.

Though staff had a sneaking suspicion he would enjoy the experience, nobody—not even Lefty—expected the amount of joy it would bring to his life.

Lefty says that being with others in the community and having a pleasant, fun-filled volunteer experience has given him purpose and made a positive difference in his life.

He finds happiness and relieves stress by continuing to visit daily with Bridgeview staff and volunteering at special events.

As a valued member of the community, he has created a positive self-identity while, at the same time, bringing happiness to the lives of others.
