Band-Aid 2022 Workshops

Come Together: The Art of the Jam

We're bringing a jam to Band-Aid, and we’re going to rock out! Bring your guitar, bass, drumsticks, horns, fingers or voice. We’ll put together bands of 4-6 members each, and each band will get to play songs and jam out on chord progressions in three to five-minute segments.

This workshop is for aspiring musicians who have never or rarely jammed with others and want to break the ice. We will focus on:

  • listening to the groove
  • chord progression
  • space between instruments
  • voice
  • intention
  • employing dynamics within the jams to take the audience on an emotional and musical rollercoaster

About the mentor

Sami Ghawi is the director of artist development and entertainment company FUSIONpresents. He works with artists of all ages and has run youth jams, like the Sunday Night Jam at West Beach, for over 10 years!  He has mentored hundreds of artists since creating FUSIONpresents in 2002 and will bring his 20+ years of experience to you!

About Band-Aid

Band-Aid emerged out of the community. Youth musicians want to use their powers for good–to create a positive culture for young bands in Surrey. They want to collaborate, work together and learn together. Band-Aid is presented in partnership with Surrey Civic Theatres, Surrey Youth, and Healthy Communities.

The Philosophy

Band-Aid is building a network where everyone is welcome to contribute to a positive and constructive music community by acquiring skills and relationships that benefit their development as musicians.

The Ripple Effect

Band-Aid breaks down barriers and connects people. Attending musicians have continued to work together–planning events, building relationships and cheering each other on. The skills and direction gained at Band-Aid have resulted in more performance opportunities. Bands have since performed at the Youth Talent ShowcaseCulture Days, the SASSY AwardsSurrey International Children’s Festival and more.
