Witness the creativity of kids in an exhibition of art by elementary school students!
An ever-popular staple of the Gallery’s community programming, Art by Elementary School Students showcases the results of the enormous variety and depth of art education available in School District 36.
Visitors to the Gallery will encounter the joy of learning expressed through the early exploration of different approaches to artmaking. Guided by prompts and hands-on exercises from their teachers, students use techniques such as pointillism, tinting, washes, shades, collage, and even wax resist in order to communicate complex (and surprising) ideas about the world around us.
With 51 participating artists from grades 1 through 7, artworks on display highlight a wealth of subjects, both personal and universal. Topics include anything from the love of nature, such as depictions of animals, sunsets, and winter landscapes, to semi-abstract paintings and collages inspired by indigenous art traditions from across the globe, and even representations of characters and settings from stories imagined by the artists themselves.
In its colour, precocity, and humour, Art by Elementary School Students demonstrates one of the most critical roles of art education: to develop the ability to relate to society and the world at large through creative self-expression.
Since 1983, Surrey Art Gallery annually hosts an exhibition showcasing the creativity of students participating in the Surrey School District’s art education programs and the value of art education in the BC School curriculum. These exhibitions are developed through ongoing partnerships with the Surrey School District and its art teachers.
