Yard to Garden Program

carrots getting hosed off

In response to the impacts Surrey has been experiencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Yard to Garden program supports residents to transform their yards into gardens with the goal of growing more food and feeding more people in our community.

Whether you are a gardening beginner or an experienced urban farmer, through the Yard to Garden program, Surrey residents are provided materials and resources to grow vegetables at home. Garden kit materials provided to participants include soil, seeds, educational resources and gardening support. When possible, gardeners are asked to donate their excess harvest to local food banks and community organizations.

Thanks to a partnership between City of Surrey and Seeds of Change Surrey food security coalition, as well as a grant provided by the United Way of the Lower Mainland, this program is provide at no cost to participants.

Each garden kit includes:

  • Seeds: Three types, suitable for a late summer or fall harvest
  • Soil: Up to ½ cubic yard (enough to provide 6-inches of topsoil recommended for a 4x8ft garden)
  • Support: Instructions and links to information on how to grow your garden

Maximum 1 garden kit per household.
