Surrey, BC – The city’s new art space at 10660 City Parkway held its official opening celebration Tuesday evening. Operated by Streetrich Hip Hop Society and Royal Canadian Theatre Company in a unique partnership agreement with the City of Surrey, this new space will not only support the partners’ production and rehearsal needs, it will also be available to other artists and arts organizations.

“I am delighted that this project has been realized as this new creative space will promote community engagement of the arts in Surrey,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “A strong foundation of arts and culture is the hallmark of a thriving City and this initiative supports the vision outlined in Surrey’s Cultural Plan to nurture arts opportunities in our town centres.”

Arts organizations have long expressed a desire for artist run spaces throughout the City. This space at 10660 City Parkway is designed to support a range of art activities including workshops, rehearsals and presentations. The space includes an art-making workshop as well as a rehearsal hall equipped with a sprung dance floor, mirrors, theatrical drapes, sound and lighting.

“The arts are a powerful catalyst in strengthening our communities,” said Councillor Judy Villeneuve, Chair of the Culture Development Advisory Committee. “This project will strengthen organizational capacity in the arts community by providing a space for artists and the community to come together, create, celebrate, inspire and share.”

Streetrich programming will focus on youth engagement through hip hop dance, music and visual art workshops and training. Royal Canadian Theatre Company will offer youth mentorship in theatre production and use the space for theatre rehearsals and set construction.
