Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey invites residents and visitors to celebrate Agriculture Week and taste BC’s largest blueberry pie at the second annual Pie in the Plaza. The free event—featuring live music, pony rides, balloon artists, face painting and an inflatable corn maze—will take place at Central City Shopping Centre’s outdoor plaza on Saturday, September 9, from 11am to 4pm.

“We invite residents and visitors alike to attend this family-fun event, which celebrates the dedication of our local farmers and Surrey’s commitment to building a sustainable and resilient agri-food sector,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase the importance and essential value of local food production to our economy and quality of life.”

Presented by Westminster Savings, Pie in the Plaza is expected to draw more than 5,000 attendees throughout the day. Opening ceremonies will begin at 12:30pm followed by the creation and sampling of the 8’ diameter pie. Local band, All the King’s Men, will be joined by fiddling duo, The Whiskey Minstrels, to perform live music.

“With over a third of  the City of Surrey’s land within the agricultural land reserve, the agriculture sector—particularly poultry, dairy, vegetable and berry production—plays a significant role in Surrey's economy and creating a vibrant, sustainable city,” said Councillor Mike Starchuk, Chair of the Agriculture & Food Security Advisory Committee. “Buying local produce and eating local produce in our restaurants is better for the consumer and the local economy."

“For over 70 years Westminster Savings has supported family-focused events that promote the arts and enhance the well-being of our communities,” said Maury Kask, Senior Vice President Consumer Operations and Customer Experience Officer. “We recognize that people in healthy communities enjoy a higher quality of life, and for that reason we’re proud to sponsor the Pie in the Plaza event that brings people together to celebrate Agriculture Week with live music, good food and good fun.”
