Surrey, BC – 45 new Canadians originating from 24 different countries were sworn in this morning in a community citizenship ceremony at Surrey City Hall. The ceremony was held in celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day.

The Government of Canada has designated June 27 as Canadian Multiculturalism Day. Multiculturalism Day is an opportunity for Canadians across the country to celebrate our diversity and commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect and to appreciate the contributions of the various multicultural groups and communities to Canadian society.

“In Surrey we take pride in our diversity,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “I am delighted that, for the second year in a row, Surrey City Hall played host to this very special ceremony. On behalf of City Council, I would like to warmly welcome our country’s newest citizens.”

The Citizenship Community was planned by the Surrey Local Immigration Project (LIP) in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

“The Vision of the Surrey Local Immigration Partnership is “everyone in Surrey belongs” said Councillor Judy Villeneuve, Chair of the Surrey LIP.  “We host this event as a way of welcoming the new Canadians and supporting them in actively participating in all that Surrey has to offer.”

As a part of the activities planned for the ceremony, City Hall tours were organized for over 70 English Language Learners who were invited to attend the event. The citizenship package provided to the new Canadians included handwritten letters from local Grade 6 students congratulating them on their big day.

Surrey LIP is a collaboration of over 30 community partners working together to make Surrey more welcoming and inclusive of new immigrants and refugees. For more information about Surrey LIP and its activities, please visit surreylip.ca.
