Growing Food

Basket of Veggies

As Surrey grows, we're all realizing buying local food is a great idea. However, you can play a bigger part in sustainability by growing your own food. From herbs to vegetables, our climate is great for growing your own food. Surrey's mild climate and rich soils make it a great place to grow a wide range of products.

Check out the City’s Sustainability Dashboard for key indicators related to local food, including community gardens and access to farmer’s markets in Surrey.

Growing Food at Home

If you are gardening on a balcony or in a small space, grow food on a smaller scale:

  • Grow herbs in a window box inside in the winter, and out in the summer.
  • Plant and grow leafy vegetables like kale, chard and cabbage in the winter.
  • Start tomato seeds in the winter, and bring them outside in the summer.
  • Taste the difference with fresh peas and lettuce in the summer.

Growing Food in Your Community

Members of your community are working with the City of Surrey to grow food in community gardens.

Get involved, get your hands in the soil, and be part of our current community gardens growing on park land and supported by staff in the City’s Parks division.
