Sample of performing arts classes offered by Surrey Civic Theatres (Cirque Surrey, children's class, Love to Sing)

Get creative at the Surrey Arts Centre (plus some opportunities at Centre Stage at Surrey City Hall). Surrey Civic Theatres offers performing arts classes, workshops, and day camps for children, youth, and adults.

Artist Masterclass Series

Master artists from a variety of practices hailing from around the country will lead students through different aspects of the performing arts throughout the year! 

Contemporary & Classical Acting
Delve into a classical or contemporary text of your choice with award-winning theatre practitioner Dean Paul Gibson. Dean is a trusted and sought-after theatre artist, notably of Bard on the Beach for the past 28 years.

Dean is a Director, Actor, Instructor, Workshop-Leader, Adjudicator, and Coach. His extended experience as a successful director of over thirty productions beyond Bard on the Beach has further enriched his skills and provides a platform for his noted ability to connect with people and their stories. 

Note: Participants must have their chosen text (either contemporary or classical) memorized, ready to work on with Dean. There will be a break during the workshop.

Imagination Creations
Imagination Creations is an introductory acting class giving children a chance to explore their creativity on stage! Through fun and engaging exercises, children will learn about the basics of theatre, and acting techniques such as creativity, focus, teamwork, and characters.

School's Out Days

School’s Out: Art MashUp – Into The Woods
Kids will check out the local flora and fauna to create art in and from nature – spending half the day dipping their toes into a variety of drama activities and storytelling games inspired by the woods, and the other half creating beautiful works of nature-inspired art!

Acting for the Camera 
Young actors will have a blast as they experience the excitement of acting on camera. Professional actor and filmmaker Orsy Szabo will lead this fast-paced, fun and informative class for students interested in film work, with a final presentation to parents during the last day.

Drama Mindcraft: Building Confidence and Character 
Are you curious about how to speak with more confidence or connect with people more easily? If you’re shy or simply wondered what a drama class might be like but never dared take one before then this is the class for you! Using the building blocks of drama such as theatre games, character creation and scenario development; you will gain confidence and self-knowledge, all while having fun in a relaxed and supportive environment. Adults Acting Out 
Led by theatre professionals, Adults Acting Out offers tailored instruction in the fundamentals of acting for the stage for absolute beginners all the way to experienced actors! Fun while also challenging, this class will refine your acting techniques as well as develop skills that are incredibly useful in your everyday life; from workplace presentations to confidence building and more! Build your skillset through games, exercises, monologues, and scene work with the possibility for future performances for those interested.

Love to Sing – Level 1
Treat yourself to a professional singing class with recording artist Rhayne. Learn the secrets of singing through the “Rhayne Method,” that teaches professional singing warm-ups and safe vocal techniques that develop your voice to its best. Enjoy singing songs from pop, R&B, jazz, blues, classics, musical theatre, and others, taught in a fun, friendly, and inspiring class setting. Everyone is welcome!

Love to Sing Vocal Group – Level 2
Learn more advanced vocal styles and techniques from recording artist Rhayne, as we sing songs from pop, jazz, blues, R&B, classics, musical theatre, and other genres. You will have opportunities to perform for the community with this friendly and welcoming group. Join us!
Must have completed Level 1 or have equivalent training, with instructor's permission by leaving message at 604-592-6984. All previous level 2 students are welcome to join this class.

Really Uncoordinated Dancers
Want the joy of dancing without the pressure of being any good? Are you brand new to dance or want to return to the basics? Then this class is for you! A professional dance instructor will guide the lead-of-foot but joyful-of-heart through a musical theatre/jazz class, breaking everything down to its simplest components. A typical class involves a warm-up, technique, choreography, and a cool-down.

Summer - Youth

Arts Club's Junior Musical Theatre Intensive - August 13–17 & 20–24 (application required)
Does your exuberance for singing, dancing, or acting know no bounds? In this Intensive for ages 12 to 17, you'll be guided by industry professionals in the kind of rigorous training typically found only at the post-secondary level. It's so much more than song and dance.
