Special Offerings

Artist Masterclass Series

Master artists from a variety of practices hailing from around the country will lead students through different aspects of the performing arts throughout the year!

Spoken Word & SLAM Poetry

Registration closes on January 25 so register soon to secure your spot.

This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning about storytelling, SLAM, spoken word, and performance poetry—from beginners through to more experienced and from any genre of writing. Guided by former Canada SLAM poetry champion Brendan McLeod, you'll craft and perform your own piece.

Spoken word over the past thirty years comes from an extremely personal place. The content is overwhelmingly existential. Political, cultural, and social critiques are made via personal stories. And spoken word artists, by and large, aren’t actors(!), which means you don't have to be one to try out this art form. To work in the oral poetry tradition is to work at establishing a cogent, honest, vulnerable point of view uniquely your own.

You will explore:
• Finding and focusing on your own unique voice
• Using metaphor and imagery effectively in live performance
• How to achieve musicality in your writing/performance
• Performance tips, techniques, and other dramatic shenanigans

Note: Cost includes 1 ticket to Brendan’s show Brain & Other Stories at Centre Stage at Surrey City Hall on February 1, 2019.
