About Crepuscular

Jeremy Herndl returned to Whalley’s Bolivar Heights where he lived as a child to create a portrait of its mix of industry, homes, and nature. This painting, done in oil on canvas, captures a “new wilderness” as seen looking north and slightly west from Bolivar Heights though the bare cottonwoods and down to the flats of the industrial park where most of the houses that once stood there are now used as office space. Herndl says, “There is a lot of desperation down in those twinkling flats, nature adorned by our industry, cottonwoods holding up lights and stars all the same.” The title Crepuscular refers to neither day nor night but the “in-between time” near dusk when many creatures become active.
