Sometimes theatre can be a way to create a safe space for important conversations about complicated subjects. Love Bomb is an example of a provocative, issue-based story that is also a compelling and engaging piece of theatre.

There are two performances of this thought-provoking show, including one for high school students.

Love Bomb takes an intimate and emotionally brave look at sex trafficking of youth in Canada, which is more common than we think. The title refers to love bombing, which is a manipulative attempt to gain favour and influence with another person by showering them with lavish gifts, attention, and affection. And even someone who hasn't been trafficked might have experienced similar manipulation.

The show unfolds as a rock concert within a mystery, with clues unraveling in the songs. A young rocker named Justine is setting up for a bar gig when Lillian talks her way into the space. Lillian presents herself as a fan, but later reveals that she's searching for Nicola, her young-adult daughter, who disappeared seven months earlier. Deb Pickman, co-founder of shameless hussy productions, shares more about the history of the play in an interview with Georgia Straight.

Audience advisory: mature themes and strong language

School Performance

The performance for high school students takes place in the afternoon on November 15. Surrey Civic Theatres is consulting with teachers to decide the ideal start time, and this information will be available here and with the Box Office as soon as it's confirmed. If you are interested in bringing your students to this performance, contact Neil Scott at

Love Bomb has toured throughout high schools across BC with praise from students, parents, and teachers alike including a parent who said β€œThe play is an engaging, insightful story and the music is great. We took our teenagers to see it because the message is important for them to hear. The play can be a lifesaver for vulnerable people. I would love every student in our province to see it.”

This teacher's guide was developed to assist educators in working through the dark, delicate issues and themes presented in the play. Definitions, background information, and guiding questions have been included to help stimulate classroom discussions and activities.
