Varvara and Mar: We Are the Clouds

Take part in a new project for Canada’s largest, non-commercial screen dedicated to digital artwork.

Have you ever seen yourself in the sky? Estonia-based artist duo Varvara and Mar invite you to participate in an interactive artwork for UrbanScreen. Through software developed by the artists, visitors to Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre can have their silhouette transformed into the shape of a cloud, to be projected onto a majestic blue sky traversing the façade of the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. Over time, other participants will join in, creating a cloud community.

If you would like to be a part of We Are the Clouds, please contact Surrey Art Gallery Assistant Curator Rhys Edwards at artgallery@surrey.ca.

UrbanScreen is located at 13458 107A Avenue in Surrey (west wall of Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre).

About the artists

Varvara & Mar is an artist duo formed by Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet in 2009. Their work is often inspired by the digital age. In their practice, they confront social changes and impacts of the technological era. In addition to that, Varvara & Mar are fascinated by kinetics, participation, and digital fabrication, which are integral parts of their work.

They have exhibited their artworks in a number of international shows and festivals, including MAD in New York, FACT in Liverpool, Santa Monica in Barcelona, the Barbican and the V&A Museum in London, Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens, Ars Electronica museum in Linz, ZKM in Karlsruhe, and more.

In addition, the duo has completed various commissions, such as Neuronal Landscapes (2018) for the Estonian History Museum and Wishing Wall (2014) for Google and the Barbican for their Digital Revolution exhibition. In 2017, they completed a public art commission in Tallinn for NUKU Theatre, and have been recognized for their public artworks in Estonia.

The artists wish to thank Martin Nadal for his software assistance on We Are the Clouds, as well as the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
