Art in Conversation

Surrey Art Gallery recognizes that art never exists in a vacuum – it's a part of a broader conversation about the world we live, work, and play in.

Follow #ArtInConversation for live event discussions and talks, interviews with local and nationally-based artists, virtual tours of art exhibitions, and other behind-the-scenes features on the artworks which move us.

Zanani / Zamana / Zameen: Feminist thinking, society, and place

Saturday, July 4, 12-2pm

Zanani (za-na-ni): the feminine
Zamana (za-ma-na): time, age, period
Zameen (za-meen): place, ground, land

Join writer Shauna Singh Baldwin, film maker Baljit Sangra, and artist Sandeep Johal for an in-depth discussion moderated by Suvi Bains on how place and society affect how we imagine the feminine. The speakers reflect on the clash of tradition and modernity within the context of patriarchy and gender inequality and share how their work creates space for South Asian voices. Hear their perspectives on cultural identity, storytelling, and place in South Asian culture, and how these themes inform their artistic practice. This event is in partnership with Indian Summer Festival. A Q&A session will be held after the live virtual talk.

More information on registration will be coming soon.

Thursday Artist Talks

The Surrey Art Gallery Association's Thursday Arts Talks series has been running at Surrey Art Gallery for over 30 years. These talks help emerging to professional artists share their work with audiences. Always presented on the first Thursday of each month, talks have included painters, sculptors, writers, illustrators, multimedia artists, and more. These talks are delivered live on Surrey Art Gallery Association’s Facebook Page, and replays are available to watch anytime afterwards.

Thursday, June 4 at 7:30pm: Monica Moscoso. Using a range of techniques while drawing, painting, and embordering and creating objects, Moscoso is interested in the relationship between creativity and the imagination. She studied graphic design and the human figure in universities in León Guanajuato and San Carlos, Mexico.

Thursday, May 7 at 7:30pm: Eunkyo Kim. After graduating from design school in South Korea, Kim worked as a designer, freelance illustrator, and artist in Canada. Her highly imaginative and darkly humorous artworks respond to current events in the complex world in which we live.
