Gangs target youth as young as 10 years old from various backgrounds. Most parents are shocked to learn their children are at-risk or involved.

Getting informed early and starting the conversations at a young age is key to building resiliency to the allure of gang life.

This free Empower Surrey Parent Workshop will provide parents, caregivers and trusted adults with localized knowledge along with tips and tools to minimize risk and build in protective factors.

Workshop Topics

In this powerful workshop facilitated by City of Surrey Community Safety Section and supported by Safe School’s Wrap Around Program (WRAP) case manager, and Surrey Anti-Gang Family Empowerment (SAFE) Program clinical counsellors, you will learn about:

  • Surrey gangs and what makes them unique
  • How to recognize and address risk factors
  • Preventative measures, including:
    • How to build protective factors into your daily routine
    • How to develop and maintain strong connections with your children and youth—one of the most powerful ways to keep kids safe
  • How to recognize youth slang that may indicate a potential for risk
  • The difficulties Surrey youth face at school and in the community told by youth
  • Where to get help if your child/youth is heading down a path towards gang involvement.
