Surrey, BC – City of Surrey invites seniors, and their family and friends, to celebrate National Seniors Day (October 1) with a free online concert and guest speaker presentation hosted on the City’s website and YouTube channel between October 1 and October 4.

“Surrey has hundreds of dedicated seniors who volunteer their time to build healthy and socially connected communities,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “This National Seniors Day we want to recognize their contributions and remind family and friends to take a moment to reach out to a senior in their life and let them know how much they appreciate them. At the City, we strive to provide age-friendly programs and services to promote health and wellness through active living.”

Presented by Chartwell Retirement Residences, the show will feature two guest speakers: Renée Sarojini Saklikar, poet and creative writing instructor, who will discuss the power of story to connect; and Noel Bentley, comedian and storytelling coach for the Surrey SHARES program, who will explore the benefits of tapping into one’s own power as a storyteller.

Drawing on influence from Scottish, Irish and Maritime music traditions, Tiller’s Folly will deliver an acoustic musical performance that uses storytelling to bring the West’s pioneer history to life.

A limited number of complimentary National Seniors Day “goody” bags, provided by Chartwell Retirement Residences, will be available to seniors at Surrey City Hall Healthy Communities Office (13450 104 Avenue) or the South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre (14601 20 Avenue) in celebration of National Seniors Day.

Attendees can access the online program at surrey.ca/seniorsday and youtube.ca/surreybc starting at 10 am on October 1.

City of Surrey supports healthy active aging through its Age Friendly Strategy for Seniors, a framework that ensures seniors, families and caregivers are supported through advocacy, policy, partnering and service delivery.
