Surrey, B.C. - Metro Vancouver’s new Central Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre opens on September 9. This one-stop drop-off facility for hand-unloaded vehicles will provide residents and businesses a convenient, and centralized location to properly dispose of recycling and garbage, seven days a week, 363 days per year. To promote the new facility and encourage recycling and proper waste disposal, the City will be hosting “Disposal Days” for Surrey residents to drop off unwanted waste and household items for free or at discounted rates from September 19 to October 2.

"The much-needed new Central Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre will serve our growing population, increase waste diversion, help curb illegal dumping and decrease travel time for Surrey residents,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “With the opening of this site, Surrey residents now have two full-service facilities to utilize for recycling and waste disposal. This is in addition to the City’s free Large Item Pickup Program and upcoming ‘Disposal Days’ events. I encourage residents to take advantage of these free and discounted programs to help divert waste from the landfill and keep the City of Surrey clean and beautiful.”

Centrally located at 6711 154 Street in Newton, the 1.7-hectare site is designed to fit in with the community and has plenty of room for vehicles, preventing traffic backups on city streets. The facility will accept material beyond what is currently accepted in Surrey's curbside collection program such as mattresses, electronics, gypsum, furniture, appliances, used oil, paint, textiles, books and green waste, ensuring waste is diverted from landfill.

“With a 64-per-cent diversion rate, Metro Vancouver is already a North American leader in waste reduction and recycling,” said Sav Dhaliwal, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors. “As we strive to reach our regional goal of an 80-per-cent recycling rate, this new facility will play an important role in Metro Vancouver’s efforts to reduce waste and move to a circular economy.”

Metro Vancouver is responsible for waste reduction and recycling planning, solid waste regulatory framework, and the operation of solid waste facilities throughout the region and has an overarching goal to reduce waste and maximize recycling. For a full list of what is accepted, the associated fees and the hours of operation, please visit Metro Vancouver's website.

To promote the new facility and further curb illegal dumping, the City of Surrey will be hosting Disposal Days at both the new Central Surrey and North Surrey Recycling and Waste centres. Residents can drop off recycling and garbage for free or discounted rates between September 19 to October 2, 2022.

During this two-week promo, all recyclables including mattresses (maximum 4 units) will be free. Garbage disposal fees for the first 300kg will also be free. Fees will be reduced by 50% for loads between 301kg up to a maximum of 1,000kg. Proof of residency required, limit of one trip per household. Commercial and business vehicles not permitted.
