Surrey, BC – City of Surrey is hosting an open house at City Centre’s Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm to present and receive feedback on preliminary concepts for a planned expansion to the facility.

The state-of-the-art expansion will be designed to meet the current and future needs of the growing neighbourhood and surrounding Whalley town centre. It will include an expanded range of recreation, sports, arts and culture programming, and enhanced learning and social opportunities.

The concepts, which outline proposed new indoor and outdoor spaces and amenities—along with a list of potential expanded activities—were informed by feedback collected through an online community survey and stakeholder workshops conducted throughout October. Open house visitors will have the opportunity to speak with the project team and provide feedback on proposed design strategies and features.

The energy-efficient expansion will be built in line with the City’s Sustainability Charter, Greenhouse Gas Emissions reduction targets and accessibility initiatives, as well as the Province’s Wood First policy. Construction is anticipated to commence in late 2022 or early 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2024.

Design and construction administration is being handled by award-winning SHAPE Architecture Inc. The project is one of 20-plus projects approved by Surrey City Council as part of Surrey Invests Program included in the Five-Year (2021–2025) Financial Plan – Capital Program.

In the next 25 years, City Centre’s population is expected to grow to around 85,000 residents. By 2045, the emerging downtown Surrey will be the business and cultural centre of British Columbia’s most populous municipality.
