Surrey, BC – City of Surrey’s Clayton Community Centre has been announced as the winner of the prestigious Fast Company’s 2022 Innovation by Design Awards in the Spaces and Places category as well as honourable mention in the categories of Accessible Design, Experience Design and Sustainability.

“Clayton Community Centre’s innovative and environmentally friendly design is something we can all be proud of,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Built to Passive House standard, Clayton Community Centre is a highly energy efficient building will little to no emissions and better indoor air quality. Compared to the same building with gas heating built to code, Clayton Community Centre operates with 72% energy savings and 98% less carbon emissions.”

Designed by hcma, with input from the local community, Clayton Community Centre integrates arts, library, recreation, child-minding/preschool, social spaces and outdoor spaces in a single facility. Clayton Community Centre is a place where the community can connect with their neighbours to play, read and create.

Clayton Community Centre is the first and one of the largest buildings of its kind in North America to meet the stringent Passive House green building standard.

“From the earliest stages of the process, we wanted Clayton Community Centre to seamlessly integrate arts, library and recreation activities, to achieve very high environmental performance and to be an inclusive, safe, and equitable place for everyone,” said Melissa Higgs, hcma Principal. “So, it’s an honour to be recognized at Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards, not only for the design of the space but also for its experience, sustainability and accessibility,”

Since opening its doors to the public in October of 2021, it has won several notable awards including, the IOC IAKS Bronze Award for innovative and sustainable sports and leisure facilities, Facility Excellence Award by the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA), and the Wood Design & Building Award.
