New Diner Exhibit at Museum of Surrey Serves Up Accessible Local History

Surrey, BC – Dine on Time invites you to feast, not on burgers and fries, but local history. The new permanent display inside the Surrey Stories Gallery at Museum of Surrey is a homage to several decades of diner culture in Surrey.

Visitors can slide into the retro 1950s vinyl booth and listen to the jukebox replica—it plays six oral histories from Surrey Archives about diner life in Surrey from the 1930s to 1960s, as told by restaurant owners, staff, and patrons.

"The foodie-themed installation has been designed in-house for full wheelchair accessibility and the listening booth has been selected to offer an audio station to improve access to visitors with vision loss," said Museum of Surrey Curator, Colleen Sharpe. "The text panels have also been translated into braille–a project we’re close to implementing throughout the Surrey Stories Gallery.”

Free pre-registered, one-hour self-guided visits are available from Wednesday to Saturday. The museum follows all citywide COVID-19 safety protocols as per Health BC, City of Surrey and WorkSafe BC. Registration is required. Call 604-592-6956 or email museum@surrey.ca.
