Surrey, BC - As we move closer to the summer season, the Surrey Fire Service wants to remind its citizens that effective on May 1, 2022, open burning, of any kind, is banned in the city.

Seasonally high temperatures and dry weather conditions present an increased risk of brush fires & nuisance smoke throughout the City of Surrey.  With the extreme heat conditions experienced last year between May 1, 2021, and Oct 1, 2021, we saw brush/grass fire responses increase to 150% of the five-year average.

Open burning including backyard fires and beach fires are not allowed in the City of Surrey. Any fire service attendance to an open burning complaint will require extinguishment and may be subject to cost recovery.

Natural gas, propane or charcoal briquettes are permitted as long as they are being used in ULC/CSA-approved devices for that particular product. Charcoal briquettes are allowed on private property but may be prohibited (when the fire danger rating is at high or extreme) in city parks and on city beaches.
