Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey is proud to announce significant progress on its ambitious major capital projects aimed at enhancing community recreation, culture, and infrastructure, demonstrating its dedication to creating a vibrant, inclusive, and family-friendly community.

“Surrey is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and these projects are a direct reflection of our unwavering commitment to building a city that prioritizes the well-being and quality of life for all residents,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “I am proud to lead a forward-thinking council dedicated to investing in our community’s future. These initiatives are not just infrastructure improvements—they are a testament to our vision of a vibrant, inclusive, and family-friendly Surrey where everyone has access to quality recreation, culture, and community spaces. We are committed to creating welcoming environments that foster connection, participation, and growth for generations to come.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to support growing neighborhoods and foster a vibrant, inclusive community, the City has shared updates on three key developments:

  • Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex Nearing Completion
    • The new Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex is on track for summer completion of its first two ice sheets, providing state-of-the-art facilities for hockey, figure skating, and public skating. Responding to increased community demand, the project has been expanded to include a third ice sheet, with construction scheduled to begin later this year and finishing in early 2027. The complex will feature outdoor amenities, landscaping, and ample parking to serve residents and visitors alike, with a total budget of $132.8 million.
  • Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expansion – More Space for Community Activities
    • The Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre will expand by approximately 38,750 square feet, adding a second gymnasium, a new fitness centre, arts and culture spaces, and upgraded amenities for seniors and children. Construction is set to start this year, with completion targeted for 2027. The project budget is $65.5 million, with designs focused on accessibility and outdoor community spaces.
  • Newton Community Centre – A Hub for Recreation and Culture
    • Set to become the heart of the Newton community, the new Newton Community Centre will span approximately 190,000 square feet and include a 50-metre swimming pool, gymnasiums, a fitness centre, arts spaces, and a modern library three times larger than the existing facility. Currently in the preliminary planning phase, the project anticipates selecting a design-build team in mid-2025, with construction expected to be completed by 2029. The project’s budget is $310.6 million.
