Surrey, BC – The 10th annual Party for the Planet, presented by TD Bank, took place virtually this year to celebrate Earth Day. The broadcast featured environmental education for all ages through virtual workshops, informational videos about Surrey’s sustainable initiatives, music, dance, children’s performances, and Indigenous programming. The livestream was broadcasted on Facebook and YouTube Live.

“Party for the Planet has continued to be one of the most recognized Earth Day celebrations in the Lower Mainland,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Although this year’s celebrations were different, we were able to bring the community together virtually to share environmental education, entertainment and City initiatives with residents.”

Hosted by the City of Surrey’s Manager of Parks, Neal Aven, the free family-friendly virtual event saw participation from the City of Surrey’s Parks, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, Transportation, Waste Management and Culture departments, as well as the community. Additional programming included musical entertainment, environmental education, arts and crafts, and dance performances by Surrey youth. The broadcast promoted Party for the Planet’s virtual sustainable marketplace, which invited viewers to explore and support local sustainably-minded vendors in the food, clothing, accessories and wellness sectors.

"Year-after-year, Party for the Planet delivers an impressive event filled with amazing performances and workshops to help ensure the focus remains on advancing environmental sustainability," said Andrew Cribb, Senior Vice President and Pacific Region Head, Branch Banking at TD. "TD is proud to be the 2021 presenting sponsor of Party for The Planet and congratulates the City of Surrey for hosting another successful Earth Day celebration."

Party for the Planet kicked off Surrey’s May Tree Sale and the City’s Love Where You Live campaign. The tree sale offers a beautiful selection of deciduous and fruit trees for $20 that must be pre-purchased before May 5 and scheduled for pickup on May 9. The program provides Surrey residents access to quality trees at an affordable price to plant at home.

Love Where You Live is the City’s beautification campaign which encourages residents to take action to help keep Surrey beautiful and clean. The campaign highlights ways to get involved, like volunteering to clean up the community for 20 minutes a week, joining a park cleanup event led by City staff, or organizing a neighbhourhood cleanup. By keeping Surrey clean and beautiful, we are helping to build a greener, healthier and safer community for all.  Reserve your tree at surrey.ca/treesale and get involved at surrey.ca/lovewhereyoulive.

Resident are invited to provide feedback on the virtual event through the Party for the Planet survey.
