Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey is kicking off celebrations for BC Seniors Week (June 6–12) early with free virtual programs and webinars hosted through surrey.ca beginning June 3.

“BC Seniors Week is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the integral role seniors play in Surrey and across British Columbia,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Our strength as a city depends on our sense of community and we are proud to support healthy active aging through advocacy, partnerships and service delivery. The Age Friendly Strategy for Seniors is an example of the City’s commitment to ensure Surrey’s seniors have every opportunity to stay active, healthy and fully engaged in their community.”

Starting with an intergenerational art workshop that connects seniors and youth, the weeklong online activity lineup includes art lessons; literature and book club activities; heritage tours and exhibits; garden, nature and travel tours; a photo analysis workshop; an author talk; a yoga class; a live demo of the new age friendly pedestrian routes mapping tool; plus educational workshops by Surrey Libraries on the following topics:

  • Estate planning, insurance and taxes
  • Living well on retirement income
  • 75 ways to save on household expenses
  • Mind your money: the psychology of savings

The City of Surrey’s Age Friendly Strategy for Seniors is a community-focused framework designed to support seniors, families and caregivers through advocacy, policy, partnering and service delivery. By focusing on four key outcomes—safety, health and wellness; transportation and mobility; home; and buildings and outdoor spaces—the goal of the strategy is an age-friendly city where people enjoy lifelong activity and engagement.
