Surrey Issues 20-Minute Cleanup Challenge as ‘Love Where You Live’ Launches
The City of Surrey is kicking off its fourth annual Love Where You Live campaign and is issuing a 20-Minute Cleanup Challenge, encouraging staff, residents, businesses and school groups to work together to clean up garbage every week to help keep Surrey clean and beautiful.
Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is kicking off its fourth annual Love Where You Live campaign and is issuing a 20-Minute Cleanup Challenge, encouraging staff, residents, businesses and school groups to work together to clean up garbage every week to help keep Surrey clean and beautiful.
“Surrey’s Love Where You Live campaign encourages us to work together to show love for where we live,” said Mayor McCallum. “I am signing up for the ‘20-Minute Cleanup Challenge’ and will commit to picking up litter for at least 20 minutes every week. I hope residents will accept the City’s challenge to do the same. Together we can keep Surrey clean and beautiful.”
The 20-Minute Cleanup Challenge is a volunteer opportunity that challenges residents to commit to cleaning their neighbourhood each week. Participants can track their hours and receive graduation volunteer hour credits during the campaign period. Litter pickers, bags and training will be provided.
Also part of this year’s Love Where You Live campaign is a Neighbourhood Cleanup Registration program that supports community, businesses and school groups wanting to organize a group cleanup. The City of Surrey will provide all the supplies needed and will pick up the waste collected. There will be a prize draw every month for eligible cleanup registrations.
The 2022 campaign also highlights the City’s summer Park Cleanup events, the Large Item Pickup program, Pop Up Junk and the neighbourhood improvement grant program.
A kickoff event for Love Where You Live will be held on April 23 in partnership with the Newton Green Team, a group of community members who perform weekly cleanups of their neighbourhoods since 2020. The cleanup event will take place at Cougar Creek Park and will also include a natural area planting.
In 2021, Surrey residents contributed more than 1,700 volunteer hours through Love Where Your Live. Residents participated in more than 40 park cleanups, and more than 200 residents took on the ‘20-Minute Cleanup Challenge.’
