Surrey’s Love Where You Live Clean-up Campaign Sees Record Participation

Surrey, BC – The 2020 Love Where You Live clean-up campaign kicked off in May, calling on residents, business owners and communities to step up to help Surrey stay clean and welcoming. While the campaign typically rallies large group clean-ups and school events, this year’s initiatives focused on individual efforts to support the Public Health Orders in place.   

“This year’s Love Where you Live Campaign may have focused on smaller group efforts, but collectively, the impact on our community has been huge,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “Surrey residents are known for stepping up and taking care of the environment and their community. With this year’s record-breaking participation, I want to thank everyone for their unwavering commitment to helping Surrey shine. It speaks volumes that in the midst of a pandemic, Surrey’s residents came out to make their city a cleaner, welcoming place for us all to enjoy.”       

Over the six-month campaign, 75 community clean-ups were organized, while following stringent safety protocols, and over 134 residents committed to the 20-minute weekly clean-up challenge.  City staff cleaned up over 208 kilometers of Surrey roads each week and waste from 7,459 illegal dumping sites were removed. Additionally, more than 10,000 trees and bulbs were planted through the Bulbs for Beauty and Releaf Tree planting programs.

The City also ramped up beautification projects to create more welcoming spaces.  Across the City, 1,700 street banners were installed and over two thousand feet of decorative streetlights were added to Town Centres. 

Love Where You Live continues to challenge everyone to participate in keeping Surrey’s neighborhoods cleaner, greener, and healthier. Every piece of litter picked up, and every tree planted goes a long way in building a beautiful City.
